Secrets and Lies is a 1996 film by Mike Leigh, about a young, black optometrist who goes looking for her birth mother, who turns out to be (an also very surprised) white woman. The two women build a friendship, among a classic cast of Mike Leigh characters - conflicted and chaotic and compromised Londoners who are living in a type of social hell. One of the most accessible Leigh movies, this is a great place to start if you’ve never seen him. It really is an amazing film! Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Brenda Blethyn, Timothy Spall, Phyllis Logan, and Lesley Manville star.
