Barbara Comyns T-Shirt

$25.00

Calling all BARBZ! If you can’t help but stan British author Barbara Comyns, whose 1950 kitchen-sink classic “Our Spoons Came From Woolworths” is an absolute must-read for fans of the era, then this shirt is for you! Comyns was championed by close friend Graham Greene, who worked in MI6 alongside her husband, Richard Comyns Carr, both under now-notorious double agent Kim Philby). Greene helped secure her publishing deal with Heinemann, and later recommended her to Carmen Callil of Virago Press, who have been reprinting them occasionally since the 1980s. Her other early classics, Sisters by a River (1947), The Vet’s Daughter (1959), Who Was Changed and Who Was Dead (1954) also feature inspiration from Comyns own life, and feature domestic English lives filled with zany characters and sprinkled with gothic fairy tales and folklore. Like Muriel Spark crossed with Angela Carter, her precise writing style didn’t shy away from death and darkness, and I think that her penchant for keeping the horror light, and the slice-of-life aspects heavy, is what makes these books so readable many decades later.

Note: If this shirt features characteristics similar to any potentially litigious Hollywood studios current intellectual property, it is purely coincidental.
